“Franchising in Retail” -
Scottish Business Breakfast

Crowne Plaza, Glasgow

07.45 – 09.30

What better way to start your day then with a hearty Scottish breakfast and franchising?!

The Scottish franchise market is one of the most vibrant in the UK and continues to make a significant and growing contribution to the Scottish economy.

Celebrating the spirit of enterprise during Scottish Franchise Week, the bfa's Franchise Group for Scotland presents the Scottish Business Breakfast 2008 .

The theme of this year's Business Breakfast is “ Franchising in Retail ”. The breakfast, sponsored by Lloyds TSB, is a key highlight of Scottish Franchise Week and includes contributions from leading figures from the franchise sector and Scotland's entrepreneurial industry.

“The aim of Scottish Franchise Week is to raise awareness of ethical franchising and the role which it plays in business start-up and job creation in Scotland. The Business Breakfast is the focal point of the week where those involved in franchising or looking to be part of the franchise community can get together to share experiences and keep abreast of the developing franchise market.”

- Bill Hendrie, Chairman, bfa Franchise Group for Scotland

Keynote Speakers

Andy Hirst, Domino's Pizza

Andy HirstAndy Hirst joined Domino's Pizza as Franchise Development Manager in June 2004, having spent over 20 years working for some of the biggest names in the Franchised Restaurant Industry, including Wimpy, McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut.

Dominos currently have over 460 stores in the U.K. and are opening new sites at the rate of 50 per year. Last year there were 3500 enquiries, over 300 applications received and a total of 30 new franchisees joining the Dominos system. The recruitment and selection of these franchisees, along with assisting current franchisees meet their expansion goals, provides Andy with plenty of challenges.

Andy worked in the burger business in the late eighties and early nineties during a period of rapid growth in the U.K. The pizza delivery market is currently experiencing a very similar phase of rapid expansion, and Dominos are well positioned to capitalise on this trend. As the company enjoys continued sales growth and record store openings it makes Dominos a vibrant and exciting place to work.

Andy currently lives on the West side of Bedford with his wife and 13-year-old daughter and in his spare time enjoys cycling and playing golf.

Ken Cairnduff

I went to Ayr Academy, “when it used to be a good school”, and despite obtaining a good number of highers etc, I chose to go into a CA apprenticeship rather than go to University.

Chartered Accountancy wasn't for me though and I moved around a lot over the next 10 years including Aberdeen, London and Ireland.

In 1979 I returned to Glasgow and started “Razzle Dazzle” selling fashion jewellery and accessories.  It was an instant success (it is still fondly remembered to this day by ladies of a certain age in Glasgow!).

RD grew and metamorphosised  into “Internacionale” over a period of years. Inter was a young fashion clothing retailer, still with a strong emphasis on jewellery and accessories.  In the late 80's I added Au Naturale as “concessions” selling gimmick gifts in the bigger Inter stores.

The Au Naturale brand grew rapidly over the following 10 years and developed into a retail park based home interiors chain with a twist.  It outgrew its Inter parent fascia and was very successful.

The business of 140 shops was sold in September 2006 to a management buy-out backed by Barclays and VC. They have struggled big time with the unique SP of Au Nat and are now in administration.

Since selling I have continued my interest in property development in a much bigger way, I currently own a retail park in Newcastle, Rutherglen Shopping Centre here in Glasgow and have just bought Kyle Centre Ayr for £37m at the beginning of this year (Plus some other bits and pieces).   I am currently enjoying “messing about” with these developments, but without the stress of being a retailer.

I have an adorable wife and three great kids, two boys aged 13 and 14 and a wee girl of 8.

Life's good, I can't complain!!!!
